Community Wildfire Property Evaluations
Members and representatives of the Lyons Fire Protection District will be conducting preliminary property evaluations in order to update our Community Wildfire Protection Plan. These evaluations are a “windshield” risk assessment of a given property to assess wildfire vulnerability. This CWPP will allow us to better allocate mitigation resources and reduce wildfire potential in the District. If you have questions or would like to request a more comprehensive evaluation of your home/property, please reach out to us at contactus@lyonsfire.org
Community Wildfire Protection Program
In 2011 the Lyons Fire Department put together an extensive Community Wildfire Protection
Program. Some efforts over the past twelve and a half years have been made to address some
of the critical items identified in that plan but much of the plan has become outdate and this past
spring, Lyons Firer received a grant to up-date this plan that in turn will allow us to apply for
grants to begin again to address those areas needing mitigation in order to lessen the severity
of a wildland fire. Part of updating this plan involves conducting an on the ground assessment
of property throughout the district and through a mail-in survey. Please find below an
explanation of both.
Wildfire Risk Assessment Surveys
In the coming weeks, wildfire professionals will conduct parcel-level wildfire risk assessments
from the sidewalk or street to determine how each home can be better prepared to survive a
wildfire. Parcel-level assessments are a quick overview of the property characteristics that affect
wildfire risk, including roof type, vegetation density, and evacuation routes. We are conducting
these assessments to understand community risk, not for regulatory purposes. Anyone desiring
a full property evaluation should contact Lyons Fire at either contactusatlyonsfire.org or call 303-
823-6611. We will then schedule a date and time and come out and walk your property with you
and then provide you with a written evaluation.
Mail-In Survey
Later this fall, you will receive a survey that will help us understand your perspectives and needs
around wildfire and wildfire mitigation. To guide our programming, we want to learn about the
community’s current state of wildfire preparedness as well as residents’ knowledge, experience,
and thoughts. We believe that community members are an important part of fostering wildfire-
ready communities. This includes you! Your participation in this survey is voluntary and
anonymous, but we sincerely hope you will respond so that we can learn about and better
address the needs of our communities.
