“Supporting those who serve”
Lyons Fire Auxiliary
What’s an auxiliary? Historically, a fire department auxiliary was a group of volunteers that wanted to contribute to the mission of the local fire department through a variety of efforts that included logistics, community outreach or education, or other services deemed vital to the fire department. Sometimes the auxiliary was made up of retired firefighters (or buffs), and sometimes it was family or spouses. Today, it can be anyone within the community that wants to be involved with the fire department, but might not have the time or desire to serve as a firefighter, EMT or Paramedic.
The LFPD Auxiliary “reformed” in 2024 by incorporating members of the former Lyons Prepared (LP) group, who had been in existence since the devastating flood of 2013. Originally formed to bridge some gaps between responders and citizens after the September flood, LP found itself doing some internal reflection ten years in. After a consult with the Fire Chief, it was decided that absorbing Lyons Prepared into a fire department auxiliary had a lot of merits. After several meetings and some storming, forming, and norming, we are here as the new and improved LYONS FIRE AUXILIARY!
What does the auxiliary do?
The Auxiliary bylaws establish some broad brush goals for the organization to lend its support to the men and women of the Lyons Fire Protection District. They include:
• Promote fire safety and prevention and first aid education.
• Be an ambassador to the District within your community and grow understanding and connections with the mission of the District.
• Outreach for volunteer recruitment.
• Maintain a communication network within the District by certain Auxiliary volunteers during large emergency events.
• Provide logistical assistance during large emergency events under the direction of the District
• Provide firefighter and firefighter family support.
